Hughes was too slow and the only thing he could do to protect his leg was turn into the kicks while trying to slide his leg back, unfortunately that meant trying to block the kicks with his balls, lol, how about that for a gameplan!<BR/><BR/>GSP completely disregarded Serra's standup which is why he was beat. Hughes was dominant for so long because of his style, as it doesn't lend itself out to knockouts. Even the best strikers will always eventually get clipped by a good punch and get KO'd and the list is 10 times longer than the dominant ground guy being submitted in a fight.<BR/><BR/>If GSP wants to excite the crowd with more KO's, he will have to take fights to the ground for at least the first round in order to significantly reduce the knockout threat to himself as almost all welterweights lose their ko power in their hands after the first round, however he will still be extremely dangerous with his kicks. <BR/><BR/>I agree that GSP doesn't have much KO power in his hands but that is almost entirely due to the fact that he very rarely plants his feet, with the positive tradeoff being that he is able to avoid virtually all counterstrikes and takedowns. That being said, there aren't any huge punchers in welterweight and GSP is near the top even in that discipline. I don't think Hughes dropped his hands because he was worried about his groin, he was more worried about his baddly beaten up legs from the many successful and obviously painful leg kicks delivered by GSP. For any true fan of mma the first thing we should learn is that although technique and ability are a large part of every win its the gameplan that secures your win, i.e. Yushin Okami (who im really no fan of, but the guys gameplans give him the wins, even though by decision) GSP has all the technique and ability to be a great fighter, no doubt, but it seems that he takes no concern for gameplan and it carried him this far. I've watched this fight about 5 times now and i can't see it any other way than this: For starters I chose Serra to win TUF and once St. Pierre beat Hughes (which I have mixed feelings over, he kicked Hughes in the nuts twice and I know Big John said it was an accident but if you look at the second shot his leg didn't slide up, he hit him straight on in the nuts, that to me regardless of intention is worthy of a point reduction after doing so twice. You can see Hughes brace himself for it when he got hit in the head. Hughes has never dropped his hands like that and ended up getting caught for protecting his nuts, but I'm off subject.) I knew Serra could take him no problem with the correct gameplan and he had it. I can never see how you can just discredit a guy based on his current standing in a division and its not like Serra fought a bunch of pushovers to win TUF, not saying that GSP has in his rise to the title. Anywho, to the fight already, if you watch closely and know the history of each fighter you will understand what I'm about to say. First off the fight starts and everyone begins heckling Serra for staying at a distance with GSP due to the "danger" of it. If you know GSP then you know that the majority of his striking power comes from his kicks, which he throws often. Serra's distance in the fight wasn't for fear of the strikes, that's not Serra's style either although he is a ju jitsu guy he can strike, his distance was to counter the kicks. He stayed far enough away from GSP that he could dodge any kick thrown and rush in and counter, the perfect gameplan for someone who puts so much pride in their kicks. I didn't see GSP land a single worthy kick and we all should know that his punches don't pack the power for him when he's standing, all his punching TKO's were on the ground. Serra showed us that there's more to striking than originally thought, there's technique and then there's just being a smart striker and in this fight the smarter striker beat the more technical striker, not all that hard to see now is it? On another note I can't wait for GSP vs. Hughes 3. I think both fighters are gonna focus on gameplan for this one and wouldn't be surprised to see a full 5 rounder. Oh and could you find Roger Huerta vs. Leonard Garcia from UFC 69 as well. I know it wasn't the greatest fight but those two just throw down in that fight and if you thought Garcia was easy pickens for Huerta just look at Garcia's face for the majority of the fight.
