I'm struck by how much the traditional boxing mindset is at play here. It's not a question of whether or not Seth was induced to not 'try his best', it's more that the direction that the fight was headed was altered by the overt incentive EXC gave him. If the antiquated laws of state athletic commissions are not adapted to MIXED MARTIAL ARTS these clowns are going to get away with taking a huge shit on the actual spirit of the sport. To make a strained analogy, it reminds me of what has happened in the financial world, as regulations that were made in the 1970s can not hope to keep pace with new technologies and techniques developed for Wall St., as people were easily able to get around the protections of an entirely different time.
SAVE THE GROUND GAME!
But there IS an incentive to not do your best if you get a bonus to use a strategy that less likely to win the fight.
Taking Kimbo to the ground was the sure bet. Everyone knew that. Paying Seth to stay standing is paying him to NOT use the best strategy, which is an incentive to not do his best.
Paying someone to stay standing is taking a tool away from the fighter.
It is no different than telling a boxer that if he only punches with one hand, he will get a big bonus.
Sure, he can "do his best" with that one hand, but his best would be better if he was encouraged to use all his tools.
