Big A said...: That was one KICKASS fight. I havent seen enough fights of Fitch so I didn't know he was so tough. That dude had a seriously tough chin. And GSP was the first person to pass his guard?...the night was filled with a lot of firsts.

I liked how GSP didn't get discouraged that Fitch wasn't dropping/giving up and kept pressing on with his gameplan.

GSP is just great. He was so calm and classy for the entire thing, a true champion.

Two comments above, I don't know what fight you were watching, but GSP dropped him, then jumped on him, landed about 5 fists, atleast 4 more elbows straight to the head and Fitch was fighting back hard. Usually this weakens a fighter enough to the point where he gets dazed, but Fitch struggled well, and it takes A LOT of energy to put on a finish like that. Once you've put a lot out and it's clear that he's not going to sleep, you pace yourself so you have energy to defend yourself later.; August 10, 2008 10:38 AM

A fighter fights. He may adjust his style to prove a point (i'm going to win by knockout or submission) but there's no fighter that's going to willingly say 'oh let's take it another round for the investors' But hey that's just my opinion.

Fitch is certainly a contender but GSP just showed him how much more work he'll need before he has a real chance at beating him.

The fact that Fitch wasn't able to keep GSP down is a testament to how good GSP is. Not a sign that Fitch isn't able to handle his own on top.

Fitch went 5 rounds, took a hell of a beating and kept coming back for more. The fact that GSP wasn't able to finish him says a lot about his heart and talent.

I don't really feel like BJ has cleaned out his division yet though. I think he should beat atleast Florian before he goes to another division to fight. dude I don't know if you watch the same GSP but he always has a smart strategie and a nice preparation. He is also very quick. Even Fitch said he wasn't that strong over all.; August 10, 2008 5:23 PM

Eamonn said...: the last BJ Penn vs GSP fight was good and semi-contriversal, but it's still just a rematch. It makes more sense to me to have someone as strong as St. Pierre to step up a weight class and fight Anderson Silva. But that will probably never happen

I do wish the UFC could put on their own version of Pride's no weight class tournaments, and just let everyone fight it out without belts and see what happens, without having to hype up a potential fight for months each time before it finally happens; August 11, 2008 7:02 AM

As far as the comments about GSP taking on Anderson, I just don't see it happening. Anderson's normal walking weight is over 200 and when he fought James Irvin at 205, it really wasn't much for Anderson Silva to step up and clean James' clock. To think that GSP would even have a chance against a fighter of Anderson Silva's strength and talent would be too much.

With that said GSP is the man to beat at 170 with unmatched take downs and defense and I think BJ would be the most obvious choice for the next fight.; August 11, 2008 4:58 PM
