Of course it also helps to be 6'11" when you're using a long weapon like a front kick.
I agree though, straight kicks (front and side) are under-used in general. If you take a look at China's Art of War Fighting Championship, you'll see former Sanda fighters in MMA using the side kick with effectiveness. It doesn't give you a knockout but it's so fast the way the Sanda fighters throw it, and it really disrupts the other fighter's offense.
