Entertaining fight. Gotta love the strikings, but you can say if Frank were to bring it to the ground it probably would have a different outcome. I'm a fan of Cung Le but i also respect Frank's heart. Cung Le is scary, he might have holes in his games but that only means he has alot more ways to improve. and Shamrock is with out a doubt one tough champ.

dude, thanks for posting the fights so quickly...

Damn. i love shamrock. oh well

I'll admit it, upon hearing of this fight I originally thought Frank was going to take it to the ground after a Le kick and dominate...obviously not so.

I think Frank's fight strategy SUCKED...too much pride...ate too many strikes.

However, I was thoroughly impressed with Kung's striking ability...fantastic accuracy...props to him for doing what he does best.

Thanks for the upload bro! That was quick! Epic fight. Congrats to Cung.

great fight pretty close until the end yeah!!! Cung Le

Frank's one of my all time favs, but he needs to save that cocky taunting horeshit for pricks like Baroni, not CL

realityocheck said...

it was okay. Frank should of went for the win instead of being too cocky. im really disappointed. i wanted to see Kung's ground game.

Anonymous said...

And Frank thinks he should be ranked near The Spider Silva. Frank's arm was fine he simply knew if he finished the fight he would lose. Thanks Cung!

Anonymous said...

Huge fan of Cung Li..however, it seemed Frank didn't bring everything to the fight...
the real question is...how would this end if Frank used EVERYTHING?

Anonymous said...

Good fight. Thanks for posting.

So far the best fight of 2008 - and major props to Frank for trying to beat Cung Le at his own game. I have a ton of respect for Shamrock, and even though it might of cost him the fight, ultimately his heart is way bigger than his ego.

Anonymous said...

you can see cung broke frank's wrist at 4:57 of the 3rd video.

Insane fight!!!
Thanks for post it.

Anonymous said...

is there a secret clause in cung le's contract that stipulates that any opponent he fights not take him down or something? i've never seen cung le on his back which is kinda weird in mma. anyway thanks a lot for the upload.

@ Geoffrey

I'd personally watch the fight first before I read any comments.

You will learn,

Anonymous said...

frank has way too much pride.
Le may be an awesome striker, but he really needs to work on his power!!!! if he could build some serious knock out power he could remain champ for a long time.

Thanks for the vids. I tried watching it on show time live, but it was a horrible experience.

If only Shamrock had the ability to take it to the ground.

Someone mentioned hes lacking acl!

It's sad that he said he wasnt going to take it to the ground beforehand. he than had too much pressure to do so.

Why would someone say their game plan before????

here is the 3rd round with the end of the fight and his reaction

Very epic. I'm glad these 2 fought...this is the most exciting fight I've ever seen hyped. Usually the most hyped fights especially in UFC turn out to be the lamest. This was top calliber.

Maybe in the rematch we'll see Frank take Cung to the ground and put a new spin on this saga.

Anonymous said...

Why was Frank trying to outstrike Le? He deserves to lose. Pride? Wanting to show he's best at everything?
He's a dumbass. Had he taken it to the ground he would still be champ right now. He doesn't have to prove anything at this point of his career (which might be finished).
Congrats to Le, he did what he was supposed and expected to do.

GREAT FIGHT!

Thanks man for posting this fight!

I wanted Cung to win, so i wasn't disapointed!

Franks strategy sucked indeed; stupid thing to do; just like Wanderlei did agaisnt Liddell; at that time i beleived Wanderlei was instructed not to take the fight to the ground to make a better show; but it costed him the fight.

Thanks again

Anonymous said...

If only Frank would have taken him down or something instead of trying to prove a point. I really think he could have beet him on the ground no question. But thats how it goes, dont let your Pride stand between you and victory.

"who said Cung Le don't know any submissions, he just put one on my right arm" --Frank Sharmock

haha funny guy

Anonymous said...

there was a rumor going on, of all places Sherdog.com, that this fight was fixed, and the way this fight turned out matched the rumor. Le was going to win controversially, and Frank is going to win the rematch setting up the 3rd match as the real one.. after watching this one, it doesn't seem to me that this was pre-determined.

Giao said...

Love your post. Thank for bringing it to us. Love both fighters. They are both true champions.

That was a great fight, shame about the kinda fluke ending.

I can't help but imagine that the next round would have been awesome, no matter who ended up winning.

its was report by yahoo sports that shamrock right forearm was broken in two places and require a plate...at the same time during the match his wife,Amy ,who was attended at the match ,went into labor during the match, she expected to deliver in May....great fight ,,,disappointed what if shamrock went to ground game ....

Sam Freedom said...

Not much to say except a guy who normally doesn't get schooled (and shouldn't look like he's getting schooled) got schooled. I think the last kick to the head really caught shamrock good. thanks so much

Anonymous said...

wow awesome fight frank seemed a little concussed lol

Anonymous said...

That was the greatest fixed fight I've ever seen.

Anonymous said...

I think Frank was afraid to take a shot at Cung because he would have gotten blasted with one of those kicks.

I don't think I have ever seen a fighter who was that accurate and quick with that many different types of kicks before.

Cung Le may or may not have a ground game, but his take down defense is pretty damn good.

Chuck Liddell used a similar combination of take down defense and unorthidox stricking to remain on top for a long time.

I am entertained by Cung Le's different approach and hope he sticks around for awhile.

Skillipedia said...

you are right. We don't see those kind of fights in the the UFC

Anonymous said...

A lot of you people that kept saying Frank should've went for takedowns, blah blah blah, he can't! He can't even take down Phil Baroni, what makes you foolios thinks he can take down Cung Le??! Cung Le was an all-American wrestler in middle school, high school, and college!

Thanks for finding a better quality video.

Did anyone notice that right after the last round the announcer said

" O franks hu-" Like he was going to say "O franks hurt" and someone cut off his mike.

I dont get what happened to be honest. I dont know if I saw a broken arm because he was punching until the end of the round. I guess you can break it and be so dumb and or tough you keep throwing. (which could be the case with prideful frank)

Pride comes before the fall. Man isnt that true.

Anyone notice what I was talking about?

Matt D. said...

I must say that I hated Frank Shamrock until I saw this fight. Frank proved he is a man of his word, by standing and trading with Cung. It was close, but I had the fight 2 rounds to 1 Shamrock after the fight was called. If he hadn't dislocated his wrist he could have drastically restored his legend status with a stand up victory over Cung.

Anonymous said...

Cung Le was delivering side kicks to Shamrock's body which eventually brought his arms down to defend against them, but Cung Le kept throwing his kicks until Franks arms were reduced to jello!

Great plan and perfectly executed by Cung Le.

Thanks for the fight.

frank shamrock should have bring it to the ground.. i mean wtf? u crazy or what? use ur skills! this looked like a wwe handicap match.
frank USER UR SKILLS! U DISAPOINT UR FANS WHEN U DONT! good striking by CL, really impressive.. but he doesnt have frank's ground game..

Johnny said...

Some people have no idea about the fight game. Why didn't Frank try to take him down? I'm an idiot. Wah wah wah.

One guy here actually got it right by pointing to Chuck Liddell. Chuck and Cung are very similar in that their striking comes at you with odd angles. Frank obviously went for the shoot early, but Cung's takedown defense is very similar to that off Chucks. Just look at the defensive stops Chuck had against world class greco-roman wrestler Randy Couture. Eventually Randy had to settle for standup because he couldn't take him down. Later, Cung figured Frank out and just kept his distance with straight front kicks.

Johnny said...

One more thing, about Cung's knockout power. People forget his background is Sanshou, a form of Chinese Kung-Fu under the umbrella of Wushu, which focuses more on style, agility, grace in fighting.

Dumb Americans are all about how big and strong everything is, so knockout power is held on a pedestal. You look at the greats, Anderson Silva and Fedor, not necessarily known for their power what makes them so great above the rest in their class is their technical skills and style.

Giao said...

I have to agree with johnny

Firstly, thank you RP for all your work.

Wow. Really. Wasn't everybody hoping to see Cung's ground game? Next fight I bet they pit him against a strong grappler, or at least I hope they do.

Frank hit Cung Le really hard with that elbow in that third round and I thought it was going to be over right there. Frank is a beast for taking all that punishment at his age (combat tends to take its toll on most humans).

Think about this, you are Frank Shamrock. OK. Then think about your career (wins, losses, belts, great fights, etc). Then think about how much time you have left doing this. Then think about where you go from the Baroni fight. This is where it becomes interesting...You see this upcoming, world-class warrior and it reminds you of you in your hey-day. Then think about what you would've wanted if you were his age. I bet Frank felt this way, and believe that he thought the best way to seal his legend is to pass on knowledge to the new blood...So what happened? Frank Shamrock brought everything he has ever learned about cage fighting into that ring and shoved it down Cung Le's throat for the sake of making Cung Le a true cage fighting champion and securing his own legacy.

It didn't matter if Frank won or lost the fight, it wasn't the point. The point was to take Le to every conceivable limit and show the world what Cung will need to do to stay a champion in cage fighting.

I believe that after this fight Cung Le is finally, really, really ready to fight whomever and I wouldn't bet against him for anyone but Anderson Silva, but time will tell...

I appreciate, as always, anyone who takes there time to read this longwinded opinion that probably won't do a damn thing except give me a sense of expression. Thank you and stay strong.

cung le also had an injured right elbow, had just got stitches in his face from an accident on a film he was working on, and only had 1/4 of the sparring matches that he normally has before a fight.

Also, when did Frank Shamrock get so damn ugly? Guy's face has been britalized over the years.

I actually live near Milipitas and seen Cung Le train for this fight. I think Frank let him win man... so they can have like a trilogy and make money off of it,
