Hey, question for Mr. Pauley. What is your definition of a great fight?
I ask because looking over the revised top 20, I think our definitions are slightly different. The video that got me thinking was Rich Franklin/Anderson Silva 1. Although I think it was a classic, it doesn't qualify as a "great" fight to me.
Great fights IMO must have:
-A very competitive fight (or barring this, at least a ton of heart shown by the fighter being dominated)
-Far above-average technical skill from both fighters OR far above-average aggression and intensity from both fighters
Elements that can also contribute:
-An interesting style matchup
-Exceptional buildup, or a matchup between giants, whether or not the fight is spectacular
-All aspects of MMA well-displayed
-World-class skill displayed in ONE aspect of MMA
So Silva/Franklin 1 had world class Muay Thai skills and a somewhat interesting style matchup, but it was complete and total domination by Silva the whole way through. Non-competitive fights can be good, but never great in my opinion.
Unless it's someone like Tito Ortiz or Melvin Guillard getting crunched, I love seeing that.
Thoughts?
Hey Geoffrey, well the first definition would be a working video for me. So yeah I have to leave alot of great fights out because the vids aren't working anymore. I agree on your definitions, but sometimes I have no choice because I can't find a working video.
Anyways thanks for the input and thanks for visiting my site!
Cool, yeah that's too bad that you're limited by what videos are still up. Even considering, it's a pretty good top 20 list.
Love the site!
