Matt Serra Forced to Withdraw From UFC 79

I hate to break some sour news everyone, here's a snippet from sherdog.

Matt Serra, who claimed the belt with a shocking win over Georges St. Pierre this April, suffered herniated discs in his lower back Monday, forcing him to withdraw from his anticipated Dec. 29 title defense against former two-time 170-pound champion Matt Hughes, the UFC announced Thursday.

Talk about depressing, read the full article HERE. I wonder what fight will replace this or is Hughes still gonna fight someone else.

Man, that really sucks. Herniated discs are nothing to sneeze about though, can't blame him.

Hey Richard,

How are you? Its Anderson. I have done everything you told me to with my blog about the submitexpress and sitemap at webmaster.

But since then, I have not recevied any referrals by search pages. There is no result! I tried searching with words thats related to my site and my site doesnt even come up.

Is it that it takes long for the submitexpress and webmaster to work? I have submitted it when you told me to, do you remember when that was? So is there something wrong with the process? Please tell me and thanks.

hey anderson, It takes awhile for your blog to show up in searches. Keep posting, dont get discouraged and eventually it will show up. It takes a long time to get a good ranking for your keywords. My advice would be keep at it and try to get as much traffic from other sources as you can, like forums and commenting on relative blogs. I would love to know what your site is about, with that info maybe I could give you some more traffic resources.

I guess Serra can talk the talk, just can't walk the walk.

After seeing how unprofessional he has been during this season's TUF, I am not surprised at this at all. He probably realized after watching the show air, how badly Matt was going to kick his ass, and he pulled up lame. I guess this means the UFC will have a joke of a champ for a few more months.

You can run your mouth Serra, but eventually it's going to catch up to you. Little punk.

Damn...not good. The longer we have to wait for this fight, the longer we have to wait for GSP to fight the winner. I hope they can find a good replacement fight so late. Still though, Chuck/Wandy is still there so can't really be too upset.

serra was funny on TUF

I wanted to see this fight sooooooooo badly and see Serra get the respect he deserves. That's not gonna happen now. Everyone's going to just write him off as a complete fluke now.

He's going to recovering from a herniated disc for some time if at all. My dad had surgery for the same thing. It's not just a little injury and this could very well be the end of his career as a fighter. I'll be surprised if he fights again.

just want to thank you again for the site....also, wanted to say that you might want to be careful about sending people to Sherdog...my antivirus program expired and I wasn't aware and I went to Sherdog and got 5 trojan viruses and 8 spyware viruses all in the matter of 15 seconds...cost me lots of $$ to fix...I let them know but no response....anyway thanks again

Somewhat curious since he has acted like such a baby on TUF and "claimed" how much he wanted to fight Hughes.

Assuming this is accurate he will be out for a long time possibly indefinitely.. ???

I hope the UFC vacates the belt and then let the top contenders go at it.

Hughes vs. GSP would be fine by me.

I dont know what was wrong with GSP the night he fought Serra but that was not the same guy I had seen before.

On Serra's best day he still gets beat easily by a mediocre GSP.

I can't believe some of the responses in here, as if it's Serra's fault that he herniated two discs in his back. I too was looking forward to this fight, but it could have happened to Hughes as easily as it did for Serra. Freak accident, it's unfortunate, but it happens. What I'm hoping for now is that in it's place, Dana White puts GSP in the card for their rubber match to fight for an Interim title. Then when Serra heals up, the winner can fighter him to unify them. GSP-HUGHES III would be just as great.

I guess he forgot to BREATHE during training.....

My biggest problem is that this is the third guy who has side stepped Matt. BJ did it after their first fight, and GSP did it after their second. Nobody has been side stepped as much as Matt Hughes has.

If Matt Serra had won the belt in a legit manner, or had defended it a couple of times, I would give him the benefit of the doubt and give him time to heal. But the fact is, he won the belt because he was maybe slightly better then a bunch of second and third rate fighters on a game show, then got lucky. Most guys have to defend their title at least twice a year, and yet Serra will probably go more then a year without fighting once.

He is not a true champion, so tell him he ether has to fight on the 29th, or he loses the belt. When or if he gets healthy, then he gets a #1 contender fight, and if he wins that, then he gets a shot as the title again.

But it is absolutely ridiculous that the UFC puts the entire WW division on hold for a guy who's most famous MMA moment was when he was KO'd by Shonie Carter.

Its official...GSP vs. Matt Hughes for an interim WW title. That gives GSP a little over a month to train for a title fight while hughes is already well into his training. This will be a 5 round fight since it is for a title.

Source is ufc.com and matt-hughes.com.

Oh and I forgot to mention that the winner gets to fight Matt Serra next year for the "undisputed" WW title. I don't like this interim title stuff but GSP vs Hughes should be a 5 rounder and the only way that is possible is if its a title fight so it is what it is.
