This is honestly the best fight I have ever seen. What I still dont understand is why Gomi gassed so quickly, Im guessing he took Diaz way to lightly. I thought Gomi would win, but he just gassed although he did knock Diaz down, Diaz quickly recovered. Also one of the best endings Ive seen as well. If you havent seen this fight its a must watch.

On April 10, 2007, the Nevada State Athletic Commission announced that Diaz failed the drug test that was taken shortly before his win over Takanori Gomi, testing positive for marijuana. The NSAC has declared the fight a "No Contest" and has suspended him for 6 months with a fine of 20% of his earnings ($3,000) won from the fight against Gomi. I was in the third row for this fight. Unbelieveable. All of us thought Gomi wouldn't even come out for the second round. The arena was explosive, 15,000 people screaming bloody murder.

First and foremost, great fight! I had never seen Gomi fight before this but had heard his name a lot and really wanted to check him out. And even though he gassed quick I could tell he has crazy good talent. As for the Diaz marijuana controversy, you have to understand that it affects everyone differently, and part of it is based on your state of mind when you take in the drug. I've known people who use is strictly to act goofy and have a good time with some buddies and I've also known people who use it for focus and concentration. And I'm sure that many people use it for other incentives as well. As for being numb... I guarantee he was feeling those punches. Diaz made it through that fight and won by skill and experience. But like all sports you have to follow the rules which he clearly didn't as shown by his failed drug test. Props to both fighters. Thats the kind of fight that keeps me loving MMA.

Gomi is arguably best light weight fighter in the world. If you know MMA you will know that this statement is true. Check shergdog's fighter rankings to confirm. All of Gomi's losses in my opinion have been due to his lack of motivation after having beaten his closest rivals(the Pride lightweight tourney featured among the best fighters in that weight class period and Gomi won it all). If anybody thinks that the NSAC knows more about the effects of thc on performance than people who have used the drug firsthand are, in my opinion, as ignorant as they get. Think of all the demonization weed is put through at the hands of doctors, phd holders, and other "experts" alike. I can read and educate myself on riding motorcycles until I'm more knowledgable than most actual riders, but it doesnt mean that I can tell you what it's like to actually ride a bike. I don't condone the fact that Diaz used marijuana but give me a break, it didn't help him win the fight. With the exception of a very badly broken nose or orbital bone (where even then over half the pain is hearing and feeling the bone being broken), I've never heard a fighter complain about the pain from punches to the head. They're fighters, they are used to it. The biggest danger from a punch is either getting knocked out, or being jarred by a punch leaving one with a hindered defence to further punches that may knock them out, neither of which would have been affected by THC.
I really don't care all that much about this particular match being ruled a no contest, but I wish they overlooked it cause we're probably never going to see Nick in a Pride or UFC ring again. Like every sport, I'm sure there are juicer's who are getting away with it and that is easily 100 times worse for cheating.

Ok, this is to all those who think thc affects athletic performance. It is proven (no less by myself :] ) by the decreased performance of many athletes over the years that marijuana usage impairs coordination and timing. I have witnessed on many accounts how crappy some of my rugby team members get when they show up to practice high. Not only does it make you a horrible athlete, but it also destroys your lung capacity.
Actually as a doctor and big fan of mma i would say paul is right "weed" does not help you perform and most mma athletes wouldnt feel the full impact of hits for about the first 10 minutes due to adrenalin rush

As the last poster said, just because he tested positive doesn't mean he was high at the time. This is the main problem with testing for marijuana, you can fail a test because you were high 3 days earlier and even longer if you are a heavy smoker. It can take up to 30 days for all the thc metabolites to be out of your system. Just because these chemicals are there doesn't mean you're high, they're just byproducts of the body breaking down the weed you smoked earlier.
I don't understand Gomi's high rankings? This fight was entertaining but kind of sloppy on both sides. If Gomi fought in the UFC a relatively low ranked fighter like Gray Maynard or Roger Huerta would probably have their way with him. Gomi is a relentless fighter who has major punching power and doesn't give his opponent time to breathe and Diaz is a master at picking away piece by piece his opponents, not to mention one of the best ground games I've seen. I'm not too sure how the fight would of ended had Gomi not gassed, but I think even at full stregnth it could have gone Diaz's way. He has a chin of iron...just watch Diaz's fight with Robbie Lawler. That was one of the best fights ever...maybe better than Bonner vs. Griffin!

also to magi, marijuana slows reaction times as well as coordination. So if he was under the influence, the only person it would have been helping was gomi. THC stays stored in the fat cells for up to four weeks, most likely that is the case with nick failing his drug test. I am sure that he would have tested with much higher levels if he had been using the day of the fight.
